Sightlines are an important part of trade shows, conventions, congresses and exhibitions. They determine the visibility and effectiveness of an exhibit booth. Sightlines are outlined in the prospectus for each convention, tradeshow and congress. Be sure to understand that they can vary from one to the other. Always review the prospectus.

Choosing an exhibit space that works with the design of your exhibit is especially important. Exhibitors must strategically consider the impact of sightlines when designing their booths to ensure maximum exposure and engagement with their target audience.

What are Sightlines

Line-of-Sight rules provide restrictions on certain areas of exhibit booths to allow attendees to view other exhibit booths in their line of sight as they walk the floor. There are a variety of exhibit booth types, listed below.

Importance of Sightlines:

  1. Visibility: Sightlines can ensure that attendees can easily spot and navigate toward your booth amidst the crowded exhibition floor. A well-placed booth with clear sightlines stands a better chance of attracting attendees to their exhibit booth and generating interest.
  2. Brand Exposure: Effective sightlines enable exhibitors to showcase their branding, such as logos, signage, and product displays, prominently. This visibility reinforces brand recognition and helps create a memorable impression for attendees.
  3. Traffic Flow: Sightlines influence the flow of traffic within the exhibit booth space. By strategically positioning key elements of your booth along prominent sightlines, you can direct flow to specific areas of interest and create engagement opportunities.

Considerations for Sightline Optimization:

  1. Height and Placement: Consider the height and placement of your booth components, including banners, displays, and signage, to ensure they are visible from various vantage points across the exhibition floor.
  2. Openness: Avoid cluttering your booth with obstructive elements that may impede sightlines or create visual barriers. Consider an open layout that allows attendees to easily see into and navigate through your booth space.

Types of Exhibit Booths

Linear Exhibit Booth – A Linear Booth is also called an “in-line” booth, is generally arranged in a straight line with exhibitors on their immediate right and left, leaving only one side exposed to the aisle.

Corner Exhibit Booth – A Corner Booth is a Linear Booth at the end of a series of in-line booths with exposure to intersecting aisles on two sides. All guidelines for Linear Booths apply.

Perimeter Exhibit Booth – A Perimeter Booth is a Linear Booth that backs to an outside wall of the exhibit facility rather than to another exhibit.

End Cap Exhibit Booth – An End-cap configuration is essentially an in-line (linear) booth placed in the position of a Peninsula or Split Island. This booth style is not allowed due to the Line-of-Sight issues.

Peninsula Exhibit Booth – A Peninsula Booth is exposed to aisles on three sides. There are two types of Peninsula Booths: (a) one which backs to Linear Booths, and (b) one which backs to another Peninsula Booth which is referred to as a “Split Island Booth.”

Split Island Exhibit Booth – A Split Island Booth is a Peninsula Booth which shares a common back wall with another Peninsula Booth.

Island Exhibit Booth – An Island Booth is any size booth exposed to aisles on all four sides.

Compliant Sightlines – Pharmaceutical, Biotech and Medical Device

Another type of sightline can affect sightlines within an exhibit for a pharma, bio or device company. While different, it is crucial to have an understanding to maintain compliance due to several key reasons:

Be A Thoughtful Exhibitor

Blocking the sightlines of other exhibitors can create an uneven playing field and diminish the overall experience for both exhibitors and attendees.
